Anti-Aging Skin Care Guide 

The following products may be used alone or in combination with each other, to help rejuvenate your complexion and more importantly, prevent further damage to your skin. It is never too early to start caring for your skin with the right products. It is much easier to prevent wrinkles and age spots than it is to reduce them!

Antioxidants: Reduce free radicals caused by daily exposure to environmental factors such as the sun, wind, temperature and pollution. These gentle yet potent anti-aging products reduce collagen breakdown, stimulate collagen production and improve skin texture and tone. They are oil free, hypoallergenic and can be easily combined with other products. Revaleskin has been shown to reduce facial redness caused by rosacea and photodamage. Hyaluronic acid serums super hydrate your skin, further reducing fine lines and giving an exceptional boost to your skin’s appearance.

Alphahydroxy Acids

Glycolic acid is derived from sugar cane and reduces pores, sunspots and exfoliates the skin to improve skin tone .A slight stinging sensation is not uncommon for a few minutes after application but it will tighten your skin and refresh your complexion. Glycolic acid is a major ingredient of the Alyria product line. Concentrations range from 5 to 30%.

Retinoids

Protects the skin from damaging UVA & UVB rays. Prevents collagen loss and stimulates new collagen growth. Increases epidermal cell turnover. Retinoids improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles; reduce pores, pigmentation and evens out skin tone. Retinol is a pure form of Vitamin A, essential to the maintenance of healthy skin. Vitamin A can be drying and should be combined with effective moisturizers. Alyria has different strengths of Retinol, which are very useful for both normal and oily or acne prone skin. Skin Medica Retinol Complex has a very potent Retinoid cream that can be used on sensitive skin, always followed by moisturization.Vivier Platine offers a mixture of Vitamin C,Retinol and Peptides.

 

Peptides

Hexapeptides: Vivier TMR high potency serum

These anti- aging peptides help diminish wrinkles by gradually reducing the neurotransmitters that initiate muscle contraction. Continued use will relax facial muscles and reduce fine lines. They can enhance the benefits of Botox®.

 

Pentapeptides: Alyria Revitalizing cream, Eye serum & Intense Wrinkle Correction. These products contain Matrixyl, a pentapeptide that mimics the skin’s natural regenerative process, stimulates collagen production, and effectively diminishes wrinkles and hydrates the skin. Skin Medica Products also contain rejuvenating peptides. Alyria Intense Firming Concentrate contains not only peptides but polymers which instantly firm your face, neck and chest.Peptides are a major ingredient in VivierSkin Platine products.

 

Sunscreens and Sunblocks

 

Sunscreens are composed of chemicals that absorb UV rays, preferably both UVA & UVB rays.

Sunblocks provide a physical barrier that reflects and scatters UV rays. They are usually composed of zinc oxide & titanium dioxide.

Many products are both sunscreens and sunblocks. The most effective sunscreens are the ones that are actually used on a regular, frequent basis and enough is applied!

You need 1 full teaspoon (5cc) to properly cover your face and 2 tablespoons (30cc) to cover your body. If you apply a very thin film of a15 SPF lotion, it will only give you an SPF of 6-7. For this reason, dermatologists usually recommend an SPF of 30 or higher!

 

Dr. Nield recommends all of the sunscreens offered by the skin care lines available in our office. These include Vivier 30 lotion, Alyria 30 lotion, and Ti-Silc 30, 45& 60.

Specialty Products

Skin Medica Nouricel-MD is a rich mixture of human growth factors, collagen, protein and antioxidants which enhances skin texture and tone, reduces fine lines and gives a glow to your complexion. Dr. Nield feels that this product is like “icing on the cake.” It can be combined with other skincare products recommended by Dr. Nield. The following products contain Nouricel-MD, in addition to other unique ingredients:

 

TNS Essential Serum combines TNS Recovery Complex with peptides, antioxidants and arbutin.

TNS Recovery Complex is a potent anti-aging gel formulated with a blend of human growth factors that will reduce fine lines, diminish age spots, hydrate and firm skin texture.

TNS Ceramide Complex is a wonderful soothing post procedure cream.

TNS Illuminating Eye Cream contains unique peptides that help reduce dark circles and puffiness and brighten the skin around the eyes.

TNS Line Refine can be used directly on visible lines to reduce their appearance.

REVISION SKIN CARE

Nectifirm is specially formulated to diminish  the signs of an aging neck as well as protecting the skin from premature wrinkling and loss of elasticity.

Teamine Eye Complex is a wonderful stand alone eye cream that can be combined with any skin care line to reduce puffiness, dark circles and fine lines.

Bleaching creams:

Vivier Seequin IDS 4% helps reduce sunspots or lentigines. Patience and sun avoidance are needed to see the benefits of this product. Results may be seen in 3 to 4 months. Useful after many in office procedures.

Cosmelan 2 and Hydra Vital Factor K are formulated to reduce the appearance of melasma. They can be used alone or as a maintenance treatment following a Cosmelan 1 Peel or a photofacial.

 

Lumixyl : is a peptide technology developed by researchers out of Stanford University to address mild to moderate hyper-pigmentation, including:

Age Spots
Sun Spots
Post-inflammatory hyper-pigmentation
Uneven skin tone

Lumixyl™ Topical Brightening Crème is a physician-dispensed cosmetic and can be used alone or in combination with other treatments or devices such as tretinoin, photofacials, and Dermalinfusion ( Silkpeels) to diminish dark spots, uneven pigmentation and improve overall skin tone.

 The foundation for all procedures is a maintainable skin care regimen. 

Cosmeceutical Tips

All patients should use a broad spectrum UVA/UVB sunscreen daily.

All patients should use a Retinoid or Retinol Product daily.

 

Don’t Forget your Neck. We are often so focused on our face that we forget to address other areas of our body that will also show signs of aging. For the neck, Dr. Nield recommends Alyria Intense Firming Concentrate, followed by Nectifirm cream. These products may also be used on your chest. Remember sunscreen to all parts of your body. Having a pale face and a tanned body can really look unusual. Rejuvenate your hands with your facial or neck creams and even consider asking Dr. Nield to revolumize your hands with Radiesse, giving your hands an instant, youthful appearance.

Rosacea patients should use anti-inflammatory products such as coffeeberry, caffeine, green tea,feverfew, licochalcone, chamomile, niacinamide, glabridin, oatmeal and aloe vera .Rosacea patients will also benefit from Photofacials to reduce redness and blood vessels. SilkPeels can further reduce dilated pores and pustules seen with rosacea.

 

Melasma patients will benefit from products that help lighten the skin such as hydroquinone, arbutin, Cosmelan and Lumixyl. Antioxidants can enhance the effectiveness of these bleaching compounds, so cosmeceuticals with Vitamin C, Vitamin E, coffeeberry, ferulic acid, soy/genistein, glabradin and niaciamide should be considered. Retinoids and Retinols also are useful.

Dermatological procedures that can further help patients with melasma include chemical peels such as glycolic acid peels or Cosmelan peels, SilkPeels or microdermabrasion. Melasma is a chronic, recurrent condition and all patients with melasma must follow a maintenance programme that includes sun avoidance, sunscreens, antioxidants, retinoids, and bleaching agents on a regular basis.

Acne patients may need prescription medications along with products that reduce oil production and exfoliate the skin such as glycolic acid. They may need products suggested above to decrease redness or pigmentation. Therapeutic procedures such as chemical peels, microdermabrasion, SilkPeels, Photofacials, and Photodynamic Therapy can be useful.

Photoaging concerns can be reduced with cosmeceuticals that stimulate new collagen production,reduce sunspots (lentigines), reduce pores and hydrate the skin. Peptides and growth factors are recommended. Photofacials, chemical peels, SilkPeels, microderabrasion, Acthyderm treatments and Photodynamic therapy can improve sun damaged complexions. Botox can reduce dynamic facial and neck lines. Juvederm and Restylane can reduce folds, sunken eyes, and sagging cheeks.

Facial Masks

Masks may be divided into two classes: Purifying Masks and Hydrating Masks.

 Purifying masks are those that draw substances out of the skin such as toxins, oil, sebum, and dead skin cells. They often contain clay and kaolin to absorb excess oil and draw out toxins. AHAs (alpha- hydroxy acids) are another ingredient of purifying masks which encourage exfoliation and sloughing of dead skin cells. Purifying masks are great for anyone with oily skin or acne as they help unplug clogged pores. They can also benefit individuals with sun damaged, thick, rough facial and neck skin as the resulting exfoliation can reveal smoother, softer skin. Those with sensitive skin may use these masks but less frequently than once a week.

 Hydrating masks add substances back into the skin such as moisture and protein. These masks often contain hyaluronic acid and water to rehydrate and nourish the skin. Such masks often soothe irritated, sensitive skin. Dry, aging and combination skin types all benefit from the hydration provided by these masks which often contain hyaluronic acid, glycerin and water. As we age, the amount of hyaluronic acid in our skin decreases significantly. This acid binds water and so, as we age, our ability to retain moisture in our skin lessens, causing our skin to become wrinkled and dehydrated.

We have two cosmeceutical masks available here in our office : The ALYRIA® PURIFYING MASK and The TNS® HYDRATING MASQUE.

The Alyria® Purifying mask is formulated with glycolic acid, the AHA of choice. It also contains kaolin, a mineral- rich powder, which absorbs toxins and oils and possesses astringent properties. It will deep cleanse your skin to lift impurities and dead skin cells from the surface of your skin involving your face and neck. Regular use will help reduce fine lines, leaving your skin looking smoother, healthier and more radiant. It can be used up to three times per week but we recommend you start with once a week application, to develop a tolerance to it.

The TNS® Hydrating masque is the only hydrating mask available that contains NouriCel-MD® that helps rejuvenate aging and sun damaged skin. This moisturizing treatment infuses the skin with a mixture of human growth factors, soluble collagens, matrix proteins, antioxidants, ceramides, and sodium hyaluronate to hydrate, moisturize, firm and plump the skin. This mask can be applied to your face and neck up to three times a week, but benefits will be seen over time, even if used only once a week.
